WILDLY FREE BREATH

The intelligence of the body – if you but tap into it for a moment in time – will bring to light all matter of holdings, contractions, numbed out and hidden places, that are crying out for attention, space and light.

Our instinctual body knows exactly how to breathe and move with optimal grace and fluidity – like the moon shining without telling it to.  You, as a piece of the moving, breathing natural world –  as the landscape you walk upon.  Have you forgotten?

Can you feel the vibration of life force – prana – that is moving through you?  If not then the opportunity is here to awaken and enliven the very cells of your being with breath.

If you are still long enough, in your solitude and silence, opening the senses wide – the inner and outer landscape comes alive with sounds, smells, sensation, vision, and perceptive entwined relating.  This is your body in primal aliveness.  A shifting art piece that is endlessly fascinating and continually changing.

Bengal-Tiger-3

As the ancient contractions release the body opens to a wild inhale of erotic desire  – a desire so strong that we realize in an instant why we have shut it down.  Permission to inhabit the yearnings of the body to be wild and free has not been granted for so many years….perhaps lifetimes.

These instinctual longings beg for life until Time stands still, bows down before you and prays for forgiveness.  Forgiveness for capturing you in it’s sticky net of illusion.  That you couldn’t simply embody moments by setting free the uninhibited breath – but instead were coerced to rush breathless into the moments that aren’t even here yet.

What a great loss it is to lose our wild primal aliveness.  For it is here that we learn what it is like to be breathed.  To lose all sense of control and certainty and deeply, erotically reconnect – like a lover with it’s beloved – to the Divine nature of simply inhaling and exhaling.

Becoming one with the breath that is breathing us all.

Our life force shimmers like a star in the heavens that even many years after it’s death remains brilliant with light.

Prana

Must we shut down on the vibrancy of our body that is housed in the soul of our very Being?

Were we really placed here to have our heads down and our eyes scanning a screen….or encased and belted into 3,000 pounds of metal and plastic, so disconnected from the earth that gives us breath…..and is breathing with and within us.

Or….are we here to delight in the simple and wild pleasure of breathing in….

and breathing out.

Supplication to the Sea

img_0909_04_01.png

Growing up right by the Pacific Ocean and the sandy Southern California beaches was a gift that I didn’t fully see in all of it’s glory and splendor until much later in life. The memories are now held dear.

I can still close my eyes and imagine being there, the warmth of the sun cooled to perfection by a gentle breeze blowing over the water.  Toes crunching in the sand often attempting to skim over the surface of the beach as the very hot grains tortured bare feet.

Trying to find the “perfect spot” to lay a towel and still be able to have the best vantage point for the constantly unfolding panorama.  Standing guard over delicious morsels of food that the seagulls will nab in an instant if you but take your eyes off of them for a single moment!

The tangy smell of salt from a body of water so immense that there was no seeing to the “other side” of it.  If you were fortunate, a dolphin or sea lion would leap out and entice you into the water to play.  Tide pools a tempting curiosity that held attention for long moments in time, and oft times a rocky perch would suffice as a vantage point for focused reflection and pen put to paper.

Sitting on my imaginary beach beside a roaring fire the ocean waves crash and race each other to the shore.  It is the water that draws me more than any other element here.  It appears endless and certainly uncontrollable by a simple human like me.  Only the natural elements can commune, shift and transform the tide and the world beneath in harmonious ways.  Only humans can destroy the balance here.

So many hours spent in the embrace of the sea.  It seems like a moment ago that I was riding the crest of a wave with sea lions racing towards the shore next to me.  Riding on top of the ocean current is an exhilarating feeling – whether on boogie board, surf board or within the space of a body.  What is essential is to be in contact with the salt filled water.  Smelling its tang, feeling the texture next to your skin as the currents push and pull, and occasionally tasting the salty brine that you hadn’t quite expected.

It is definitely a rush to be one with a wave and it is not without an element of overwhelming awe and at times a tinge of fear for good measure.   I liken it to how we approach life in any given moment.  There is a doing when we take on the attitude of being the most skilled at riding a wave and all that goes into the sport of it.  Added into that can be a presence of observing each minute part of this journey, yet somewhat removed from actually what is happening in any given moment.  Then there is engagement, where the doing and observation is transformed – a complete and utter surrender into direct embodied relationship with the elements.

Of the latter I will weave a story of such utter engagement that there is no room for focusing on simply observing or doing.  Perhaps it is a combination of all three that join together when in one moment you are skimming the surface of foam on the crest of a wave, and in the next find yourself within a watery world where a sense of direction and belonging to any order is obliterated.  Where organized elemental chaos reigns.

What is it like to inhabit the inner workings of the sea when a wave has ceremoniously and suddenly dumped you within it’s crashing towards the shore?

Disorientation, panic, fear, physical upset can join each other in a dance that does not have steps.  Nor are there any precise steps to learn in those moments.  What rides along, resting underneath the human primal urge to survive, is an opportunity to find out what happens in the spaces in between a world of roiling, murky water becoming in an instant calm again.  Providing a clear pathway to life giving oxygen and the upper world of a surface landscape.

Yet, in those moments when everything feels blown apart and resembles the experience of tumbling down a rabbit hole, an instant in time suddenly appears where one is requested by forces much greater to simply let go of the struggle.  To intimately make love to, and commune in union with, the elements of water, salt and sand by allowing their united collaboration to lead the way.

Can it be that the simple practice of halting the process of breathing for a few moments while making love with the sea can provide a space of unequaled opportunity to know what it is like to surrender completely.  A surrender that asks nothing less than to submit your will to the elements that make up the cells of your being.

Breaking free into the world above your private watery womb is exhilarating.  Releasing into an anam cara (soul friendship) with the very elements that have just recently captured the space of your body completely.  For in an instant, you realize that this merging has brought you home to freedom and a joy in simply being alive.

Suddenly finding the shifting ground beneath your soles brings gratitude.  A celebration of now that only the watery embrace just moments ago could have opened space for.  What is it to breathe freely once again?  To feel so intimately connected with something so powerful is at once humbling and ecstatic.

Take these moments and weave them into the story of You.  Know that you have been given a second chance to prostrate yourself before Life and God and all that claims aliveness.  For you are among the cells that make up the entire cosmos.  That have just moments ago danced with the possibility of a death of sorts, and found on the other side that there is no duality, only a claim to breathe.

To courageously and creatively express the at times painful ecstasy of what it is to be human – traveling towards the shore of Being.

EMERGENCE: Bringing To Light the Unseen and Unrecognized

Deep in the ground
a root grows out of nothing.
Soon, a blossom emerges sending its fragrance
to the wind.
A bee stops for supper.
Pollen spawns an offshoot
years later
a garden of verbena appears.
All that lives grows within,
All that dies lives within.
Each breath nurtures
an unfolding,
pours water
to a budding blossom
and the chest flowers open
breath by breath,
leaning towards Spring.

-Leza Lowitz, Yoga Poems, Lines to Unfold By,
Revolving Head to Knee

Walking in the brilliant sunshine on a path I know well here in Austin was cause for celebration of emerging life that has been hidden within Winter’s embrace. The turn of season’s, especially Winter to Spring, reminds us of the aspects of our being that lay in wait to be rediscovered and brought into the Light as the lovely pink buds on this tree.

Today was my usual day to visit my one remaining Hospice patient at a nearby nursing home. I know little about his life before he was placed here, but what I do know is that in spite of the advancing Alzheimer’s disease he brightens and opens when his senses are stimulated.

What to some is a man who is retreating into a world where no one can reach, is to me unlimited potential for emergence. If you have never been in a nursing home before, and particularly on a Memory Care Unit, you will not know of the containment that often exists and the lack of stimulus to open into flower.

On this emerging Spring day we decided to take a short walk outside in the patio of the Memory Care Unit. As soon as the sunshine and the fresh air were upon Terry his entire being opened and blossomed right in front of me. Ahhhhh sounds erupted, a smile broke across his face, eyes widened, full breath engaged. His excitement literally vibrated through the hand that I was holding as we walked a bit and sat on the patio listening to the sound of the birds in the nearby trees.

In those moments I was privileged to witness that which is unseen and unrecognized by most who care for him daily. Living systems come into being through emergence and are illuminated as they change in the ever present dance of life and death. Art, music, writing, dance, science, the natural world….and we as humans are part of this biological phenomenon.

Taking some moments to be absolutely present to those small unassuming births, rebirths and deaths align us with our own lives in a way that illuminates those liminal thresholds of emergence.

Breathe…..

The Last Breath

last_breath_by_powl96-d63pbab

Breathing is an indicator of whether we are alive or not.

We come into this world taking our first breath with somewhat of a struggle as we inhale this new substance called air.

Little do we know that it will determine the quality of our life and how long we shall live in this particular body.

Our heart nor brain can function for very long without the precious inhale and exhale that marks our every moment.

We somehow forget this as we hold on to our breath, half breathe shallowly, tighten and contract our bellies, or over breathe during moments of anxiety decreasing the quality of those very life moments that are so very precious.

Two hours ago I was at the bedside of a most beautiful 89-year woman who was on the other side of that first life filled breath that brings us into the world. During my year and a half as a volunteer for hospice this woman became a part of my heart.

It happened that my regular visiting time coincided with her taking her “last breath”. Surrounded by loving family Irene transitioned amidst loving stories and touch, laughter, permission to let go, and deep gratitude for being who she was.

This is not the first time I have witnessed a “last breath”, nor will it probably be my last. During those last minutes as the heart slowed the labored breathing became a simple soft sigh of release as life as she knew it slipped away.

Such a gentle letting go that it could have been missed if one looked away just for a moment.

Not all deaths are as peaceful as this one was. What a gift to have it so.

Our breath gives us life. We never know when the next inhale will be our last. In fact we experience a little “death” every time we exhale having to completely trust that there will be a next inhale.

As I gave Irene a final kiss, told her how much I loved her and left the family to say goodbye to her I took a full breath and in that moment realized this.

Every inhale and exhale is a milestone along our path. We only have so many of them before we too transition. If how we breathe is how we live our lives….how would you want to breathe?

 There are choices.

Soul Musings/Day 31: Reflections on Listening to Soul

10599193_10205023948736333_513572188647808156_n

Gaye Abbott at A Healing Collective, Houston, TX

For those of you that may have been following these Soul Musings for the past 31 days I express my gratitude. In total there have been 93 posts including today’s which is rather unbelievable to me as I was ready to quit it all on Day 5!

True to form there will only be 8 sentences here (though the one following is indeed a very long one!) with the last two being specific to this particular blog. I have experienced many things as I have committed to this practice and among them have been the fickleness of the creative muse; the release in simply writing something and then letting it go; observing the critic that wanted to take main stage but whom I banished to the netherlands (where is that anyway?); the groundedness of a regular writing practice; at times the self-imposed pressure of hitting that “Publish” button every single day on 3 blogs; allowing for the polarity of “good writing” and “bad writing” to vanish from my vocabulary; that there would be “something to write about” every single day, but more, trusting that I would listen to what was coming through and simply act as the translator on behalf of full uncensored expression.

When I was urged from the depths of my Soul – from Source – to commit to this practice I was at first certain of it and then wanted to flee from the implications of it. The months of going without writing anything prior to this practice have now fled into oblivion (would love to know where that is too!) and I am washed clean of any hesitation to simply write from the deepest parts of my being.

So many spaces to breathe in from an embodied perspective. The bottom line is to remember that the air we breathe is what interconnects us to all that is alive……and how we breathe has a lasting effect on the quality of life we all share on this planet and beyond.

NAMASTE

Soul Musings/Day 30: Breathing With Whales

humpback-whale-dolphin-2240x1488

I carry a prejudice that there are a myriad of other precious things in life to pay attention to than social media. Yet the connections that lead to deeper ones, or the last video posted that has you breathing with humpback whales, leaves you changed inside forever.

We live in a seemingly complex world filled with distractions, obligations and concerns. Hardly a moment to take a simple full inhale and exhale to relish the feeling of letting go.

The beauty of our interconnected world is that we can have experiences and meet people that although not in our physical domain, connect us to our soul of being. It is here that we realize there are no barriers on this small planet of ours.

In fact we are but stardust manifested in a biological form that continues to shift consciousness with the realization that every single life form is breathing with and for us. Take a few moments now to click the link below and join the pure magic of simply breathing with a pod of humpback whales.

Soul Musings/Day 28: Breathing With Your Feet

b9de10c90e3a718bc7be3a44f5df792b

Standing with eyes closed we may feel our feet clutching the ground beneath us. They have forgotten to trust that the earth will support them.

This disconnect starts much higher in the tension that holds our breath captive above the heart. No wonder we have forgotten how to be as fluid and flowing as the river that easily moves around barriers.

Notice what happens as you let go of the contractions that dwell in the ego. The body softens and the breath cascades down to kiss the earth.

If everyone breathed with their feet just think how differently we would relate to our planet.

Bowing in scared reverence for our life.
