Take A Deep Breath and Smell the Moment!

Dear friends of mine are living in Bali Indonesia for a 9 month exploration not only of a simpler life, but of the senses.  In a Facebook video Vicki created she made the comment, we are learning to “take a deep breath and smell the moment”.  This lead me to share with you a chapter below from my book “Give Us This Day Our Daily Breath ,which will be released later on this month.  Enjoy smelling into your moments this week!!

WEEK #31: 

The senses of taste and smell are so intimately connected that without the scent of the orange or the unfurling rose filling the next inhale the taste buds and senses would not open the doorway to pleasure.  Take a deep breath and smell the moment!

Let’s focus on the nose and mouth for a bit this week.  The air moving through your nasal passages, carrying the smell of food along with it, is enhanced by chewing. Taste buds then blossom out to extend beyond the salty, sour, sweet and bitter and inhabit entirely new territories of savory pleasure.

Researchers say 75-80 percent of the flavors we taste come from what we smell. Humans can recognize 10,000 different odors, yet no two people sense anything the same.  Animals of course have an even sharper sense of smell.

We also orient through our sense of smell, and oftentimes are triggered by certain scents which bring past memories and associations to the forefront.  This sense is much more powerful than something that has been simply seen or heard.

We have all had the experience of smelling something and a person comes to mind, or an incident that involved something emotional or of a feeling nature…..or even a reaction to a scent that activates fear or excitement for it has been associated with something dangerous or advantageous to our survival or well being.

When we take a deep breath through our nose (which was made for it by the way) air is sucked up into our nostrils over bony ridges called turbinates, which add more surface area for the smells that waft through our nostrils.

Most of us have done the experiment of holding our noses and chewing something resulting in almost no sense of taste – certainly not expanded taste.

When we change to breathing through our noses, the sense of taste roars back in and we can experience our food and our surroundings with pleasure, which then stimulates the digestive system and our overall enjoyment of the moment.

Try walking through a forest or along the seashore without the sense of smell.  Maybe try breathing through the mouth instead as an experiment.  Would it be as pleasurable or as life enhancing?

It appears that there is more than one reason why breathing through the mouth decreases our aliveness and enjoyment of life.  Mouth breathers often hyperventilate and only the upper lobes of the lungs are inflated.  This causes muscle tension in the shoulders, neck, head and face and stimulates that “fight or flight” sympathetic nervous system once again.

The nose however, contains tiny hair like protrusions called cilia that warm and filter the air in a rhythmical wave like motion.  The entire lung, including the lower lobes, is inflated and this in turn connects to the parasympathetic nervous system which clams the body, slows the heart rate, relaxes and soothes – and of course stimulates the olfactory nerve – or the sense of smell.

When we take full and deep breaths through our nostrils we enhance the pleasure in, and enjoyment of, our lives.  See how many smells you can identify this week and allow your taste and sensual life buds to open up wide! (Copyright 2011/Gaye Abbott)

Breath of Transition – A Solstice Offering

As we in the Northern hemisphere experience the transition of moving from the darkest day of the year and turning into the gradual return of light, our interconnected global neighbors in the Southern hemisphere are experiencing the opposite.  This turning is felt in the deepest reaches of our bodies, minds, hearts and souls.

I ask of you today to stop.  Stop and take a transition breath from business to stillness, from stress to absolute relaxation, from moving into the future or holding on to the past –  to being present in this moment only.  Find a moment of rest and simply being to take in the exquisite images and hauntingly beautiful voice that are part of the video below.

Breathe….and remember why you are here.  Simply to love and be loved.

Breath As A Tap Root

Imagine if you will a very large dance floor where everyone is moving freely in their own rhythm weaving in and out among other bodies in motion.  Sometimes making contact with others by mutual consent to play with movement, dance, touch, and energy – and at other times silently exploring a unique world of your own.

In the very center of this dance floor is a woman who often breaks out in gales of laughter.  People move in and out of her field sometimes connecting physically and other times merely sending her love, smiles or energy – in other words nourishment.  Every time that this woman laughs it sends reverberations throughout the room and smiles break out everywhere.

She is feeding the dance like a “tap root” from which other “roots” sprout laterally out in all directions.  This tap root forms the center upon which rides the well being and growth of all the other roots.  Without it the vitality of the organism as a whole would not continue and new growth might not be supported.

The breath is like a tap root with the lungs on the inside and the air from without giving and receiving within each inhale and exhale.  Our breath grounds us in the present moment and reminds us that we are here to thrive and passionately and compassionately live our lives to the best of our ability.

We share the nourishment with others in a deeply interconnected dance of life that has been choreographed expressly for us by a central force so strong that often we just begin to imagine and embody the power we are being given.  The tap root continually reminds us that a fully lived life is within a fully embodied creative breath.

If you have never even thought about moving freely from the tap root of your breath…you might give it a try.  A breathing space of ecstatic, free, unrestricted movement from the center of your being!

The Lessons of Murmuration

This past week I was fortunate to have come across a video that took my breath away with wonder.  Wonder and awe at the amount of interconnection that is present in our everyday moments.  Most often we overlook this and don’t pause to consider that even the next breath that we take will affect every single living thing on this beautiful planet of ours.

The following was written by Brandon Kiem on “Wired Science” about this stunning display by thousands of starlings :

Video of a massive starling flock turning and twisting over a river in Ireland has gone viral, and with good reason. Flocking starlings are one of nature’s most extraordinary sights: Just a few hundred birds moving as one is enough to convey a sense of suspended reality, and the flock filmed above the River Shannon contained thousands.

What makes possible the uncanny coordination of these murmurations, as starling flocks are so beautifully known? Until recently, it was hard to say. Scientists had to wait for the tools of high-powered video analysis and computational modeling. And when these were finally applied to starlings, they revealed patterns known less from biology than cutting-edge physics.

Starling flocks, it turns out, are best described with equations of “critical transitions” — systems that are poised to tip, to be almost instantly and completely transformed, like metals becoming magnetized or liquid turning to gas. Each starling in a flock is connected to every other. When a flock turns in unison, it’s a phase transition.

At the individual level, the rules guiding this are relatively simple. When a neighbor moves, so do you. Depending on the flock’s size and speed and its members’ flight physiologies, the large-scale pattern changes. What’s complicated, or at least unknown, is how criticality is created and maintained.

It’s easy for a starling to turn when its neighbor turns — but what physiological mechanisms allow it to happen almost simultaneously in two birds separated by hundreds of feet and hundreds of other birds? That remains to be discovered, and the implications extend beyond birds. Starlings may simply be the most visible and beautiful example of a biological criticality that also seems to operate in proteins and neurons, hinting at universal principles yet to be understood.”

An intimately choreographed dance which cannot be explained merely by science.  This is the miracle of interconnection on display for us to see instead of just feel.  As the air holds these birds in a dance of wholeness and energy the breath of the women below witnessing this miracle is contained within the same air as the birds.

How do we explain these phenomena?   Perhaps we just remember that it is the same vibration that holds us in deep interconnection as well.  We are just as much a part of this murmuration as they are to us.  We have just forgotten….

LIFE BREATHING

All around us everything is breathing
Listen carefully
for you may miss the soft exhale
of the flower on the vine.

Butterfly wings waft the air

in a series of exhales
As the tree that shelters
