Soul Musings/Day 13: Trusting There Is Enough

bu-monks-on-roller-coaster

Trusting that there is enough air to breathe is an underlying sustainable process that goes on day after day without our conscious attention.  Imagine for a moment that all aspects of your life carried this much trust.” Gaye Abbott from Give Us This Day Our Daily Breath

It is within the exhale that we trust there will be another inhale to follow, for if we did not we would never let go of the air that is nourishing us at this moment. We would cling on to it as if it is our last breath – our last chance at life.

The quality of your exhale then represents how much you do indeed trust your life. Holding-on to the exhale, or in other words holding-back from exhaling, mirrors areas of your life that could be immersed in conversations that hold doubt, fear, protection or contraction in your body.

Here, within the bodies sacred union of air and the process of breathing, is nested an opportunity to come into direct contact with what may be holding you back from taking that next active step, or fully expressing yourself.

Take some time to play with your exhale (yes PLAY!) by singing, chanting, laughing, or sounding on the exhale – perhaps with an extended “ahhhhhhh” sound, or the sound you make when traveling down a roller coaster with your hands up in the air!

This gives your body a thumbs up to reinstate the liquid relaxed flow of the exhale and to interrupt conversations in your body that create stagnation and potentiate contraction.

Use the breath to be aware of ways in which you are holding back on your own life ……and play with the freedom and trust that an unrestrained exhale provides.

Soul Musings/Day 12: Breathing Possibilities

possibility-concept-images-5

We thrive and survive in possibility.

The next breath we take is rooted there.

That breath will be taken.

Or possibility shut off ……and we die.

Every time we deny our life moments.

Too busy to notice what is beckoning our soul.

We fall into the abyss of intellect.

Missing the calling of our heart becoming .

Soul Musings/Day 11: Alive Now

waterfalls 11

On the inhale silently say to yourself “alive” and on the exhale “now”.

Take time to rest in the pause before the inhale naturally returns.

This moment is a gift of awareness.

Resting in the pause that you are “alive now” is a daily breath practice that can be used like a mantra.

As an opportunity to watch the breath.

Living your life in the moment.

Inhabiting aliveness.

Now….

Soul Musings/Day 10: Embracing Mistakes

Life is filled with them – mistakes that is. How else could we learn, grow and expand the creative breathing space and learn who we are if not for them.

This video by Victor Wooten makes some great distinctions for musicians. They can also be applied to many other aspects of our lives.

Embracing our mistakes opens the doorway for learning and full on creativity to emerge from other spaces we might not have explored otherwise.

Placing ourselves in the company of others that have gained competency, mastery or artistry challenges and inspires us to reach more deeply inside and discover the unique style/language yearning to be expressed….or simply the yearning.

Challenging ourselves to step up, step out, and “play” more opens what might be a narrow container into a full on playing field where we fall into the possibility of finding out what we are really made of.

And last but not least, bringing that full, juicy, sometimes quiet and still, poetic Soulful expression from the deepest recesses, and most expanded and convoluted spaces of our Being is damn interesting!

(This post dedicated to Brian Alger, friend and fellow writer on the path….)

Soul Musings/Day 9: Infinite Patience

Infinite Patience by Pamela Turczyn
Infinite Patience by Pamela Turczyn

__________________________________

With so many demands on our time and attention this time of year patience certainly can grow a little thin at times. Pamela Turczyn, the creator of the mandala above in collaboration with the maple tree, has created a practice that is actively “listening for something unfamiliar”.

This “unfamiliar” place rests in a vast space where patience resides. A space that can only be accessed if you commit to being in the present breathing moment.

I invite you to connect with this mandala through the rings of the maple tree that are represented here. Awareness on the breath deepens the experience and allows the journey to come to you.

Open attention, breath and soft visual focus will open you to the moment. A moment of Infinite Patience….

“A maple tree with a special gift for it advised me that Patience has to do with one’s relationship with time; to cultivate Patience, one must be fully present in the moment. To do so, try silencing the inner monologue by first shifting to an attitude of open attention, as though you were listening for something unfamiliar.

~Practice Patience by visually tracking the curvy edges of tree rings in this mandala. You could do this using just your eyes, or you use could a capped pen or blunt pencil as a tool to trace along the edges.

Without rushing, follow every dip and projection all the way around one of the circular rings. Keep your focus on the exact point on the ring where you are at, without looking behind or projecting forward. Slow down if you find yourself jumping ahead. There is no reward for finishing quickly but there is a prize for bringing yourself present.

In the present moment, there is no past or future. Instead, there is an expansive sense of the eternal, a space where Infinite Patience resides.

~An alternate route to the same expansive destination involves gazing at the center of the mandala with soft eyes. Stay with it and you will notice movement as various tree rings appear to come forward while others recede. As you are held by fascination with what is happening, a portal in the center of the mandala will open, bringing you in contact with the old maple tree and the vibration of Infinite Patience.”
