Soul Musings/Day 7: Rushing to Yoga

savasana

Time got away from me this morning and I forgot to listen to my Soul.

The Sunday morning yoga class ritual was to start in 30 minutes and I was still at home.

Throwing my props into the car I drove like a mad woman to what was in reality only 10 minutes away.

Contracted breath and frantic thinking clouded the fact that I was indeed going to a yoga class.

As I entered the street that the studio was on awareness flooded through almost knocking me over with the ridiculousness of what I was doing.

How many times in a day do we forget?

Forget that this is our life right now, not 30 minutes from now when we will be in a class focused on a moment to moment awareness of breath and body.

And Soul laughed….. as the peace of awareness descended.

Soul Musings/Day 4: Giving The Gift of Presence

Lights

Giving presence is a gift to another and being present is a gift to yourself.  Today a very beloved friend learned that her eldest brother was in a car crash in which he was paralyzed from the neck down, and then taken off of life support.

I was with this friend all day today helping her move to a larger apartment before she was informed of this tragic news.  This evening I listened deeply, offered my loving assistance, and was painfully reminded once again how short and uncertain our lives really are.

What are we doing when we say we are “too busy” to get together; are transfixed by our smart phones, Facebook, or e-mail; forget to look our friend or lover in the eyes and hold the gaze with a depth of intimacy and transparency; take for granted the astonishing beauty of our natural world; tell a child that we have “important things to do” when all they want is loving attention.

In this moment as you are reading this take a full embodied inhale, hold for a pause and then with willingness to surrender exhale fully while being reminded of why you are here….that deep calling that has been there for lifetimes.

Show up in the moment, hold someone’s hand when they are dying, create an inspired connection, allow for each and every moment to unfold with intimate attention, love with abandon, and listen…..listen deeply to the present and fully be the presence.

…..for our lives are gone so quickly.

Ungripping Life’s Breath

Snow Leopard Collage 6

I walk lighter, stumble less, with more spring in leg and lung, keeping my center of gravity deep in the belly, and letting that center ‘see.’ At these times, I am free of vertigo, even in dangerous places; my feet move naturally to firm footholds, and I flow. But sometimes for a day or more, I lose this feel of things, my breath is high up in my chest, and then I cling to the cliff edge as to life itself. And of course it is this clinging, the tightness of panic, that gets people killed: ‘to clutch,’ in ancient Egyptian, ‘to clutch the mountain,’ in Assyrian, were euphemisms that signified ‘to die'” (125).”–Peter Matthiessen, “The Snow Leopard”

It has been many years since I read Peter Matthiessen’s “The Snow Leopard”, but I still remember being mesmerized by the journey and often felt as if I was right there taking each step – both inner and outer.

Though I have not been to the Himalayas the quote above reminds me of when clinging or gripping would indeed have gotten me killed in the physical sense and closed off from possibility in a “soul’s journey” sense.  This was many, many years ago on the Hawaiian island of Kauai while hiking along the original Kalalau trail of the Na Pali coast.

Kalalau_23_cliffs_seth_2_sm

Kalalau cliffside trial, Na Pali coast

There are many areas along this 11 mile trial, with end destination to a pristine beach, that are considered dangerous and can result in death or severe injury.  Having read about one particular part of this trial before I even left on the trip the pattern for “gripping” or contraction in breath and body was already bound up in the fears of falling over the cliff side into the ocean below, or not being able to make it past this particular part of the trail (it was about two thirds of the way in) and being the only one of the party of 4  that couldn’t go on.

This part of the journey was about the flow that Peter Matthiessen speaks of in the quote above.  Allowing each breath to be a signpost for the next step and the next and the next.  The trial was literally along the cliff side just as in the picture to the right.  There were no handholds, a wind was blowing, and past the people you see on the trial there was a 90 degree turn that had to be negotiated with a heavy back pack on – again no barrier to falling.

As fate would have it we camped right before this part of the trial the night before we were to go on this leg of the journey.  Up to this time I had been the last one in a single file line as we hiked along absorbing the boundless beauty along the way.  After a very restless night and some fearful tears I was the one that lead the way before the others were even ready to embark.  Perhaps it was ancient Hawaiian guides who whispered in my ear to start early, breathe fully from the belly keeping my center of gravity there, ground down through my legs and feet,  take one step at a time, and completely embody the journey.

As the breath stabilized and anchored my center of gravity there were moments when my whole world shifted to NOW, and NOW, and NOW demanding that I embrace the experience and the moment of absolute presence.  There was a catharsis after that 90 degree turn when safer walking territory presented itself, yet the most powerful feeling of absolute freedom permeated every part of my being.

We don’t have to be on a cliff side with a shear drop off to understand that gripping  the breath residing high in the chest means  not only diminishing  life force and well being, but cutting off – or killing – opportunities and possibilities for thriving within the challenges that life presents to us on a daily basis.

How would you like to be breathing? How would you like to be living? Place your hands on your belly and be grateful….

Tornados and Rainbows

10014594_843504845677113_826429325_n

This nature choreographed pas de deux may never be captured again. The glimmering light colors of a rainbow are always changing requesting our attention to beauty.

Do we perceive that in the moment, or instead gaze back at the rainbow minutes later only to find that it has shifted in color, intensity, or perhaps disappeared all together.

The tornado, just by it’s very presence evokes focused power, potential destruction of what is, and possibility for change as it travels across the sky and land. It demands attention by all in it’s path.

What happens when demand and request merge together? It may open a space of magic leaving the beholder in awe and wonder…..offering a space for possibility and powerful creativity.

Indulge me for a moment here. If the rainbow questioned whether it was beautiful enough or contained the right colors and intensity of light, hesitating before it made itself visible….

…or the tornado wondered if it could be powerful enough to move as intensely focused as it thought it should and hesitated….

…. the two would never have met and the moment of alchemical connection would have been lost. The original and unique creation of a “rainbow-tornado” might never have come to be.

What about our life….our individual life moments….our complete and absolute dedication to becoming all that we are meant to be this time around?

Do we hesitate, question and throw up excuses….or do we step up into our capacities as whole beings and connect with what enhances our expression and expands our service on behalf of life.

Take a very full conscious breath and consider this –

Someday you will die.

Take another conscious breath and consider –

Someday everyone that you are connected with and love will die.

Take one more full conscious breath and consider –

What will you do now with these ever changing precious moments of your life?

Sweet Chestnuts of Roslin – Breathe With The Ancient Ones

BREATHE WITH THE ANCIENT ONES:

When you are next out in the woods you may come across some ancient ones. You know who they are for it almost feels as if they are telling you the secrets of the ages. As you breathe in the air around them images come to mind of lives long past and creatures still present – circling round, sniffing your presence as if to determine just what kind of being you are.

It is the ancient ones that remind us of who we are in our fullest expression. That ask us to lay down our fears and breathe life into the creative impulse that quickens in us as it has in them for hundreds of years.

Our aging faces and bodies look gladly upon these ancients before us for we recognize the lines, crevices, textures, twists and turns of life well lived – a breathing, pulsing and at times mysterious Source of life that speaks to the expanse of creative potential and interconnection.

Next time you are in the woods remember to share a Breathing Space with the ancients, for they will hold you captive with their tales…… while giving and receiving the breath of life….

Thank you to Breath of Green Air for this magical and beautiful post!   Gaye

Deep in the old woods of Roslin Valley there live two very ancient tree ents. In the green shaded light of the summer woods you can make out their limbs and faces, which have grown here for over 400 years. In fact they have stood here for so long that time has gathered in a shadowy mist around its branches, pausing time and place. A deep velvet hush hangs over the hollow and everything present holds its breath afraid to wake the dozing giants, descendants of Roman immigrants 2,000 years ago.

If you venture close enough, you can look up into the branches where antlered wooden deer run free through the field of leaves. With their horned heads held high they keep watch over the paths leading to the old tree creatures body. Among the moonlight these deer hide from Odins Wild Hunt, as they have since time began. All…

Non-Separation and the Breath

968803_10151710775915435_465562610_n

A few years ago a story of the consciousness of interconnection unfolded right before my eyes.  This happened from a place of non-separation, or in other words a real sense of oneness between people and nature.  It is a simple story really – one of three men and a tree.

Two of the men were leaders within their Balinese community.  One man had cut down a tree without permission from his community village.  You see in Bali one must obtain the permission of the entire village before cutting down a tree.  The sense of interconnectedness with nature and among themselves pervades the Balinese culture.

These two leaders were discussing – with tears flowing down their faces – what kind of consequences the man who had cut down the tree must face.  He had apparently done this before, most likely for carving art pieces to sell, so the discussion was a serious one.  I never found out what they did decide, but I did get to sit with one of the leaders and share meditation and mutual discussion about cultures translated through his brother.  I thanked him for this beautiful living example of  deep awareness on how each interconnected being or life form intimately affects another.

How is it that we forget that we are not separate from anything or anyone when our  breath tells us that we are constantly intimately connected.  We share the very air we breathe with all living things.  My dear friend and lifelong mentor, Richard MillerMiller, Ph.D of iRest  (grounded and concrete tools to come back home to a place of non-separation and well being) spoke eloquently on non-separation at the Summer of Peace through The Shift Network recently.  He emphasized that the ultimate healing for all humans lies first in our sense of separation from ourselves and secondly the “other”, or the world outside of ourselves.

In a recent class I was privileged to facilitate – Decrease Anxiety, Indulge Inner Peace – I remember saying that I believe the core of anxiety comes from when we go away from or leave behind our deep purpose in life, which comes from our wholeness.  This results in feeling a sense of separation.  This very sense of separation activates anxiety.

Our strong innate imprinting to belong and to survive  as we grow up into adults often times takes us away from the very sense of already belonging/deep interconnection that is a gift we are given at birth.  This leave taking from our  feeling of harmony with ourselves and life itself brings us to “war” within and without.

Deep abiding inner peace and equanimity brings us home to the state of non-separation, or as Richard says “non-dual” state of being.  What better tool to resonate with than the breath to remind us over and over and over that we are an integral part of the whole and never separate.  Inhale connected to exhale sharing with an abundant circle of life in the moment.  When we resonate this peaceful place those around us will attune to the same state.

Be the change you wish to see in the world….come back home.

Breathing Room

227417_391753057600038_79348995_n

These three things that matter can most often be found within another three states: Silence, Stillness and Spaciousness.  How our ego puts up a fight against even dipping one single toe into a space large enough to hold a full inhale and exhale in this very moment.

Try this simple exercise and see what happens – stand with feet planted on the floor about a hip distance apart, arms at your side with palms facing forward.  Watch as a full breath starts from the belly, expands the ribcage and back, then cascades like a waterfall on the exhale pausing in the pool of breath at the bottom.    Take several breaths this way.

Now close your eyes and lean forward as far as you can without tipping over.  Watch what happens to the breath.  Now come back to center and root down.  Watch what happens to the breath and be aware of all the micro-movements and adjustments the body must make in order to simply stand upright.

For most of us this simple exercise reflects what happens constantly all day long.  We lean into the future and our breath is literally held as our mind takes us to the next thing on the agenda.  There is no breathing room.

I experienced that today in a conscious exercise in yoga class.  As we moved very slowly from one pose to the next the mind wanted to revolt, to run, to judge, to do anything but be quiet to the burning muscle or the reflex thought about tomorrow.  Instead we were instructed to place our mind on gentleness within the silence, stillness and spaciousness that grew as each breath passed.

To gracefully let go of the ego’s urging to move out of the pose, run to the bathroom, or chant the mantra – this is too hard!  Watch the breath, love the body, let go gracefully of what is not meant for you.  How much more do we suffer if we don’t give enough breathing room to expand the moment that we are in right now?
