Spiral Of Breath

When we really pay attention to our breath a spaciousness arises that has a quality of art in movement.  Have you ever thought of your breath as an art piece? As a representation of a timeless geometric code?

The exquisite Thomas Rucker photo above captured my attention in a very breath and body oriented way.  It represented to me the Golden Ratio Spiral which is the mathematical expression of the life breath of a living universe.  Golden Ratio Spiral spins the breath up, around and through the spine as well as spiraling back and forth through right and left nostrils.  This is all a microcosm of the galaxy we spiral within.

The air we breathe, and all life forms as we know them emerge out of timeless geometric codes.  The very nature of our breath is a sacred representation of all life on Earth….and the entire Universe.  Can you imagine what it would be like to be a tiny particle traveling on the back of the breath?  The inner worlds you glimpse might take you shooting off in directions unknown and drop you down into the knowing of a moment nestled in the silence of a pause.

We are an integral interconnected part of the spiral of life.

Allow breath to emerge as an artistic expression of the universe

Wrapping you in carefully selected layers of receptive earth, air and stone.

Touch the layers of life around and within you.

Ride the spiral of breath……

Breath of Transition – A Solstice Offering

“We meditate on the glory of that Being who has produced this universe; may He(She) enlighten our minds.”

~Swami Vivekananda/translation of the Gayatri Mantra

As we in the Northern hemisphere experience the transition of moving from the darkest day of the year and turning into the gradual return of light, our interconnected global neighbors in the Southern hemisphere are experiencing the opposite.  This turning is felt in the deepest reaches of our bodies, minds, hearts and souls.

I ask of you today to stop.  Stop and take a transition breath from business to stillness, from stress to absolute relaxation, from moving into the future or holding on to the past –  to being present in this moment only.  Find a moment of rest and simply being to take in the exquisite images and hauntingly beautiful voice that are part of the video below.

Breathe….and remember why you are here.  Simply to love and be loved.

A Solstice Offering from BreathingSpaces to YOU…

The Miracle of Life Breathing

The miracle is not to walk on water. The miracle is to walk on the earth in the present moment;

to appreciate the peace and beauty that are available now.

– Thich Nhat Hanh

LIFE BREATHING

All around us everything is breathing
Listen carefully
for you may miss the soft exhale
of the flower on the vine.
Or the inhale of rich brown soil
from the earthworm beneath your foot.

Butterfly wings waft the air
towards you as an offering
While bird songs are heard
in a series of exhales
As the tree that shelters
releases a leaf to the ground

Chimes move in the breeze
creating the sound of the breath
in notes sung in tune
with the expansion and contraction
of the Earth – all in union with
your next inhale….. and exhale

Be present to life breathing around you
mindful of the artful ways that
breath pulses among the
minutest of cells and atoms
woven amidst the field of being
that captures each one of us within the next inhale

All breathing for and with each other
An exchange of intimacy that
connects us in levels so deep
that even the whale in the ocean depths
senses into the next breath
that you will take.

Be still for just a moment and listen
to the symphony of breath
that fills every moment
with the exquisite pleasure
of being Alive Now.  Life is breathing.
Listen….listen

Do You Remember?

Beauty is here.

and you are here…

you were always here…

do you remember?

Reflections today on the awareness that we are not what and who we think we are and neither is any one else.  As Jon Kabat-Zinn says in his book, Coming to Our Senses – Healing Ourselves and The World Through Mindfulnes:

“We are all much larger, and more mysterious.  Once we know this, our possibilities for creativity expand enormously, because we understand something about how we get in our own way and are diminished through our obsessive self-involvement and self-centeredness, our preoccupation with what we think is important but really isn’t fundamental. ”

May we always remember the interconnection with the many sacred gifts around us.  We are the stuff of which all of this is made… in the breathing space of the planet we call earth. Let us collaborate with, and support creativity in each other – sustaining this life, our lives – the future generations of all living things!

Life Breathing Through Us

When we come together with another life form we share the breath in the air that surrounds us.  We take of the same breath so to speak.  Down through the millennium this has continued.  In fact we are breathing and sharing the recycled air of the dinosaurs, the very first humans, the dolphins, and the trees.

In many of the classes, workshops and retreats I have facilitated in the past I often had people sit back to back and feel their own breath first,  then connect with the breath rhythm of the other without changing theirs.  Almost everyone noticed, in a short period of time, that the breath would synchronize and become one.

Perhaps it was one to begin with…   Through this interconnected basic biological process we can feel each other, and with acute knowing understand what is within the other – even if we do not consciously acknowledge it.  What if each of us joined another – or others – in sharing a peaceful breath rhythm with each other?  Would the world change?

Remember these wise words from Thich Nhat Hahn as we breathe in each others presence:

You are me, and I am you.
Isn’t it obvious that we “inter-are”?
You cultivate the flower in yourself, so that I
will be beautiful.
I transform the garbage in myself, so that you will not
have to suffer.
I support you;
you support me.
I am in this world to offer you peace;
you are in this world to bring me joy.
–Thich Nhat Hanh

…and catch yourself before you make that next complaint.  Instead, breathe in union with another for a moment…or two….and become the lake…..

The Feeling Underneath

Be A Lake

An aging master grew tired of his apprentice complaining, and so, one morning, sent him for some salt.
When the apprentice returned, the master instructed the unhappy young man to put a handful of salt in a
glass of water and then to drink it. “How does it taste?” the master asked.  “Bitter,” spit the apprentice.  The
master chuckled and then asked the young man to take the same handful of salt and put it in the lake. The
two walked in silence to the nearby lake, and once the apprentice swirled his handful of salt in the water,
the old man said, “Now drink from the lake.”  As the water dripped down the young man’s chin, the master
asked, “How does it taste?” “Fresh,” remarked the apprentice. “Do you taste the salt?” asked the master.
“No,” said the young man.  At this, the master sat beside the young man and said, “The pain of life is pure
salt; no more, no less. The amount of pain in life remains the same, exactly the same. But the amount of
bitterness we taste depends on the container we put the pain in.  So when you are in pain, the only thing
you can do is to enlarge your sense of things…stop being a glass. Become a lake.
