Soul Musings/Day 28: Breathing With Your Feet

b9de10c90e3a718bc7be3a44f5df792b

Standing with eyes closed we may feel our feet clutching the ground beneath us. They have forgotten to trust that the earth will support them.

This disconnect starts much higher in the tension that holds our breath captive above the heart. No wonder we have forgotten how to be as fluid and flowing as the river that easily moves around barriers.

Notice what happens as you let go of the contractions that dwell in the ego. The body softens and the breath cascades down to kiss the earth.

If everyone breathed with their feet just think how differently we would relate to our planet.

Bowing in scared reverence for our life.

Soul Musings is a 31-day practice for the month of December immersed in deep listening to what is emerging and unfolding day by day.  Eight sentences with occasional resources to explore more deeply.

Each post, invited by Soul, allows the words to emerge unscathed from prior planning, editing, or censorship.  Dwelling in uncertainty and dipping a toe into mystery this union of words is an attempt to resonate within an innate way of Being…. returning “home”.

Soul Musings/Day 16: The Pause

space

We too should make ourselves empty, that the great Soul of the Universe may fill us with its breath”. Laurence Binyon

It is within the stillness and emptiness of the pause that all life unfolds. This is the space that is ripe with possibility uniquely structured for each body.

It is obvious to many that life in “civilized” culture distracts constantly and attempts to fill the spaces. We didn’t have this kind of “noise” for most of our human evolution, but instead had our intuition, instincts, senses, innate skills, memories of other seasons and times, nature….and our tribe of others to rely on.

Underneath, and beyond this civilized noise is a space to rest in. The space between the inhale and exhale.

Accepting this space by emptying out in those precious moments is the alchemy that brings us back to full breath. The great heart and Soul of our Being.

Soul Musings/Day 15: Attentive Holiday Breathing

Smile-Hahn

Mailing packages at the post office today I felt it. That rather frantic irritable energy that seemed to be emanating off of many there.

One of my clients this week noticed that she felt irritable after coming home from work. She couldn’t get a handle on why.

I feel it in the space – the holiday breath holding – and have a natural remedy   always on hand to soothe this energy and return the owner of any particular body back to a connected embodied peace.

Of course you know what I am going to say – breathe fully from the belly reaching upwards into the diaphragm, expanding the ribcage and dropping the shoulders down to the earth, inhale after exhale.

Such a simple practice that can be done wherever you are with side effects that ripple out to those around you. Try it out and feel the energy shift as you attentively relax into your next breath and a soft smile emerges on your face….

Soul Musings/Day 14: Heart Openers

th

What better practice this time of year than to do heart opening.

Whether in a yoga class, in meditation, smiling at a stranger or gazing in someones eyes.

There is yet another practice that holds the possibility to go deep within your own heart and connect to those in your life that have been, or are, challenging relationships….a practice that emerged for me during yoga class today.

The greatest gift you can give anyone is that of acknowledgement for the absolute love they are and have always been for you…even in the midst of difficulty and estrangement.

In your imagination see that you are meeting each one of these people one after another and as you walk up to them and look into their eyes say the acknowledgement with open heart, embracing them and breathing together, then pulling back and with hands at your heart bowing.

That person will be replaced by the next person, and the next, and the next, until you have a circle of those that have passed through your life and left you changed forever….who you are today.

They have all played their part in your unfolding life and you in theirs.

Perhaps it is time as we near the end of the year to open the space for heart and body opening release and lovingly let them go…… or invite them back in breathing peace.

Soul Musings/Day 13: Trusting There Is Enough

bu-monks-on-roller-coaster

Trusting that there is enough air to breathe is an underlying sustainable process that goes on day after day without our conscious attention.  Imagine for a moment that all aspects of your life carried this much trust.” Gaye Abbott from Give Us This Day Our Daily Breath

It is within the exhale that we trust there will be another inhale to follow, for if we did not we would never let go of the air that is nourishing us at this moment. We would cling on to it as if it is our last breath – our last chance at life.

The quality of your exhale then represents how much you do indeed trust your life. Holding-on to the exhale, or in other words holding-back from exhaling, mirrors areas of your life that could be immersed in conversations that hold doubt, fear, protection or contraction in your body.

Here, within the bodies sacred union of air and the process of breathing, is nested an opportunity to come into direct contact with what may be holding you back from taking that next active step, or fully expressing yourself.

Take some time to play with your exhale (yes PLAY!) by singing, chanting, laughing, or sounding on the exhale – perhaps with an extended “ahhhhhhh” sound, or the sound you make when traveling down a roller coaster with your hands up in the air!

This gives your body a thumbs up to reinstate the liquid relaxed flow of the exhale and to interrupt conversations in your body that create stagnation and potentiate contraction.

Use the breath to be aware of ways in which you are holding back on your own life ……and play with the freedom and trust that an unrestrained exhale provides.
